Drivers must protect themselves fully as the risk of a claim is greatly increased in the current freezing weather, according to MoneySupermarket.com.
Auto insurance customers should ensure that they have breakdown cover as part of their policies in the current wintry conditions, it was suggested today (January 6th).
A ‘big freeze’ has descended on the UK in recent weeks, with heavy snow falling in various parts of the country and temperatures dropping far below normal for this time of year.
As a result, driving conditions on roads are hazardous, particularly with the threat of black ice after the latest round of snowfall this week.
MoneySupermarket.com has now urged drivers to check their policies for breakdown cover, particularly as their vehicles are more likely to experience problems in the freezing weather.
“Comprehensive motor breakdown cover is a must for motorists to avoid being stranded in the cold. I advise Brits to make regular checks to their vehicles before driving to avoid being a victim of a breakdown,” commented head of motor insurance Steve Sweeney.
“Taking regular precautionary measures such as checking the oil level, anti-freeze, hazard lights, and tyres for tread depth and pressure, and stowing a spare tyre in the boot of your car are a good idea.”
Mr Sweeney added that keeping items such as a torch, a reflective triangle warning sign, a high-visibility jacket, a first-aid kit and jump leads in the car is also a prudent approach.
The treacherous conditions on the roads also increase the possibility of drivers being forced to abandon their vehicles.
With this in mind, MoneySupermarket.com is asking Britons to contact their insurers to clarify their level of cover for this scenario before they set off on their journeys.
Last week, AXA Insurance announced that it has launched a new auto insurance app for iPhone users which is designed to help them in the event of an accident.
