Which? recommends auto insurance for youngsters

A new auto insurance policy gives young people a curfew in exchange for lower premiums.

Young people over the age of 17 have been offered a new auto insurance policy which will help them to keep the costs of running a car down if they adhere to a curfew set by the firm.

Consumer watchdog Which? has praised the initiative from RSA Insurance, through Welsh broker Motaquote, which provides drivers under 26 years old a cheaper deal on auto cover if they do not drive between the hours of 23:00 and 05:00.

According to the road safety campaigner Brake, car accidents are the number one killer of young people in the UK and Motaquote aims to discourage them to drive late in the evening, when visibility is low and alcohol consumption is a greater possibility.

Nigel Lombard, managing director of Motaquote, said: “Young drivers remain in the age group with the highest proportion of insurance claims, road crashes and fatalities on our roads. As we go into the darker winter months, it is even more important to highlight these dangers.”

Dan Moore, auto insurance expert for Which?, added: “One in five young people drive without insurance, partly because it is so expensive. Innovative policies such as this will hopefully go some way to reducing the number of uninsured motorists in the roads, and keep more your motorists safe.”

In other news, the AA recently said that learner drivers could be getting a raw deal from companies that allow their trainee instructors to provide paid-for teaching.

The auto insurance provider carried out research showing that 97 per cent of its members are against letting young people be taught by unqualified instructors while paying full price for the service.
