You Might Want to Call Your Agent and Make Sure Your Florida Condo Insurance is Ready for the Holidays
Home insurance companies have a different view of the holidays than the rest of us do. To us, Thanksgiving is for family and Christmas is the time of gifts, friends, decorations and holiday music that will leave you rockin’ around the Christmas tree all night long! That’s the way to do it, right? For your Florida condo insurance company, on the other hand, the holidays are one endless nightmare of kitchen fires and holiday break ins.
Thanksgiving is for family. Did you know that Thanksgiving is number one on the list of days of the year your kitchen is most likely to go up in flames? Too many cooks spoil the broth and set the curtains ablaze! That’s not exactly the way you want to remember your holidays (and you definitely don’t want to have to join the list of people waiting for their claims to get paid between Black Friday and Christmas) so it pays to stop disaster before it has the chance to get started. And, of course, make sure your Florida condo insurance is geared up and ready to go.
Prevention
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to keeping your house in one piece over the holidays. Let’s start by talking about smart cooking practices. Make sure the top of the stove and the surrounding countertops are clear of the debris that usually goes along with cooking a big meal (plastic pouches, cardboard boxes, butter tubs, etc) and that happily go up in flames. Keep curtains tucked up and out of the way. Make sure the handles to your sauce pans are tucked back and, most importantly, try to limit the number of people in your kitchen when you’re cooking Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.
Don’t put real candles on the tree. It always ends badly.
How’s your security system? Florida condo insurance policies always include clauses for little things like unlocked doors and windows, most of which are going to result in you not getting your claims paid, so make sure the house is locked up tight when you’re not at home. Install a deadlock, since YouTube is teaching people how to use bump keys these days. Consider purchasing a home security system, don’t advertise it if you’re headed north for the holidays (although why anyone would leave the Florida heat for the Pennsylvania snow is beyond me) and have someone stop by to check on your condo and bring in your mail.
If thieves don’t know your house is wide open, they’re not going to break into
Florida’s a great place to spend the holidays. Just make sure you keep your home in one piece while you’re at it! it. It’s as simple as that.
How’s Your Condo Insurance?
I usually try to make sure my home inventory is updated before the holidays. Makes sense, right? The last thing you want is to find out your condo insurance isn’t going to reimburse you for that stolen flat screen because you forgot to tell them about it. If you have one of those flat rate coverage deals, make sure it’s enough to replace everything in your condo. You never realize how much it’s going to cost to start over until you actually have to do it. Your Florida condo insurance is there to make sure that’s a wake up call you don’t have to have.
