A major motoring association has advised car insurance policyholders to take particular care on country roads this bank holiday weekend.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists has warned that crashes on rural roads tend to be more serious and unfamiliar country lanes pose lots of hidden risks.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research for the group, said: “The lush grass at this time of year makes it particularly difficult to see round bends, so take corners with extra care.”
He added that the number of motorcycle accidents also tends to rise in summer months, with more than 75 per cent of such incidents occurring in fine weather and on dry roads.
According to research by the organisation, summer is the peak season for rural road deaths and serious injuries.
A recent study also found that 45 per cent of rural road deaths and serious injuries occur on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with most taking place on dry roads in fine weather.
