New Year’s Resolution – Lower Your Car Insurance

It stands to reason that the more youre on the road, the higher the chances of you being in an accident. Therefore, one of the best ways to get a discount on your car insurance is to reduce the number of miles that you drive on a daily or yearly basis.

If you really want to lower your car insurance, then you may want to consider changing the type of coverage that you have. You wont be able to do away with liability in most cases, since 45 states currently mandate that you carry it. They also have a minimum amount, so you should stick with the minimum if you want to save more money.

However, you can also choose to reduce the amount of medical, comprehensive, or collision coverage that your policy provides you with. If you raise your deductible, then your premiums will become lower each month. Just keep in mind that this can backfire if you do happen to get in an accident. Youll be forced to come up with the money to pay the deductible before your insurance company joins in to cover the rest of the expenses.

Its also important to note that you may not even need comprehensive or collision coverage at all. Those who drive older model cars may fit into this category. If the value of your car is lower than 10% of your premium, then dropping your comprehensive or collision coverage may be a good idea.

Another great way to get discounts on your auto insurance is to take a defensive driving course. Youll only have to devote a few hours of your time in order to take advantage of this discount. However, this can save a lot of money over the long-term. Just make sure that you take a course thats been approved by the company or state. Oftentimes, taking one of these courses after you get a ticket wont increase your insurance rate.

Some companies also offer a loyalty discount. The longer you stay with the company, the more discount you can get. The minimum requirement to take advantage of this discount is a stay of three years however.

Other companies give discounts to their younger drivers if they make good grades. Younger drivers are typically forced to pay higher insurance premiums anyway, so discounts will certainly be a good thing.
